This case involved a property tax default in Michigan. Longyear contested that the
Michigan statutes violated the Fourteenth
Amendment by denying due process. The Supreme Court disagreed stating the statutes provided
sufficient notice and opportunity to be heard.
Of note regarding the general property tax, apparently the question of the alleged debt was never
challenged, but only the process of the assessment, failure to pay the debt, and the next tax lien sale.
As with so many court cases, ask the wrong question and the right question never gets answered.
